About Us

Philip Hayden Foundation

Since 1995, Philip Hayden Foundation has cared for at-risk children, including orphans, kids with disabilities, and unsupported children whose families aren’t able to provide the care they need. We serve these special kids by providing humanitarian aid, medical care and therapy, education, and vocational training. Our work began in China, and we recently expanded into Mexico.

PHF is a nonprofit organization that relies on the financial support of people like you. With your help, we can transform lives that are considered hopeless into beautiful stories of redemption and love.

Since our founding, we have:

  • Cared for more than 4,000 orphaned children.
  • Provided more than 3,000 surgeries and medical procedures.
  • Helped more than 900 children find Forever Families of their own.

Although we have helped hundreds of orphans find adoptive homes, we have many wonderful children who still need families of their own. Who knows, maybe your family is one of them? Check out our orphan support to see kids who are waiting for their forever families.

Caring for Children for 25 Years

Beginnings

Timothy and Pamela Baker came to China as English teachers in 1988, along with their good friend Philip Hayden. Their hearts broke when they saw how many orphans in their community needed love and care. They began helping in local orphanages however they could, and they used their own funds to purchase supplies like diapers and formula.

Philip Hayden died from a rare heart defect when he was just 28 years old. The Bakers established the Philip Hayden Foundation in his honor and continued their work caring for Chinese orphans. They focused on the children with the greatest needs, especially orphans with disabilities.

PHF partnered with adoption agencies to find forever homes for as many orphans as possible. To serve kids with disabilities who were waiting for a family or couldn’t be adopted, the Bakers founded Shepherd’s Field Children’s Village in 2006. Shepherd’s Field was a safe, loving home where children could grow and flourish.

As China has changed in the last 25 years, so have the needs of orphans. Today more than 98% of the nation’s orphans have disabilities. Some have minor conditions that are easy to correct, and others need complex, ongoing medical treatment. PHF works alongside local organizations and charities to care for these vulnerable orphans. We also serve unsupported children with disabilities whose families cannot care for them.

Together with our partner agencies, we offer compassionate care to kids in need throughout China and beyond.

A Renewed Vision

When the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, the Bakers, as well as the entire international staff,  had to leave China. Access to the country is still difficult, but the needs haven’t gone away. PHF continues to support the work of local charities and agencies in Asia, focusing on at-risk children with disabilities. While not always orphans, these kids and their families need extra support to survive and thrive.

In 2021 the Bakers moved to Yucatán, Mexico, and PHF began serving children and their families there. Tim and Pam volunteered in Mexico more than 40 years ago and fell in love with the Mexican people. During college they dreamed of working with children there, but their path led them to China instead. Now 40 years later, their dream of serving in Mexico has been fulfilled.

The popular resort town of Cancún sits on the Yucatán Peninsula, but beyond the sparkling beaches, more than a quarter of a million people live in extreme poverty. Many families struggle to survive along the edges of the region’s larger cities. PHF is establishing relationships with local charities in the Yucatán to transform the lives of vulnerable children and families.
